American Academy of Pediatrics lists most dangerous medical devices for children

What’s the most dangerous medical device for kids, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)? Get ready to be surprised. The answer is: contact lenses. The revelation is included in the recent issue of Pediatrics, published by the AAP.

More than 70,000 kids visit the ER each year due to complications from medical devices. Aside from contact lenses, other culprits include:

  • Hypodermic needles
  • Ear tubes
  • Pelvic devices used during gynecological exams

Research findings like these can help medical staffs weigh the benefits and risks of using medical devices in young patients. It’s also important for medical staffs to understand why these injuries occur so devices can be used with a lower rate of risk.

Assessing the Competency of Low-Volume Practitioners:
The Joint Commission requires that hospitals verify physician competence using performance data. Yet organizations often have little or no data related to the competency of low- and no-volume physicians. Medical staff leaders are therefore challenged to develop a strategy that guides the hospital's relationship with low- and no-volume providers, and medical staff services departments are challenged to establish systems to verify physician competence. This fully updated book and CD-ROM set offers the necessary tools and strategies for medical staff leaders and professionals to manage the increasing number of low- and no-volume providers and comply with Joint Commission standards.
